‘Our Favourite Motorway’ by Darren Hayman
My friend @chippanfires and I were remembering that we’d both bought this album on the day we met and I think that’s always at the back of my mind when I listen to a song from it, especially given Matthew’s teenage ambitions to become a town planner. My favourite track from it changes from time to time but at the moment it’s Our Favourite Motorway. https://darrenhayman.bandcamp.com/album/pram-town-a-folk-opera
‘Me and My Arrow’ by Darren Hayman
I heard this Harry Nillson cover for the first time this week, riding the overground, and despite its few lyrics, seemed to entirely capsulate how I’d been feeling for the past couple of days. It’s a much less jaunty version than the original and although seems bleaker at first, I think is still full of hope for the future. Embarrassingly, I found the major-minor-major chord sequence in the chorus so beautiful it brought tears to my eyes (although I think there were underlying issues). I’ve also been thinking about Darren Hayman recently as I’ve reconnected with my friend Matthew, with whom I have a friendship based on loving DH’s band Hefner and having a sad childhood. Thank you Darren ad RIP his beautiful dog Beulah. https://darrenhayman.bandcamp.com/album/dog-e-p
‘Where Is David Bowie?’ by No Cars
Adorable pop punk with a clarinet jazz centre, that is a dream combination for me. I was supposed to be playing No Cars on the radio today, but that’s not happening now. Maybe Thursday? Instead I’ll be walking around Harrow trying to find the correct light bulb.
